Ballast Water & Invasive Species
Applies to: Any vessel, except for military and recreational vessels, that discharges ballast water into U.S. waters
Requires: Ballast water from any vessel must be discharged in according to the rules found in section 2.2.3 of the Vessel General Permit (even for vessels that do not require the permit to operate).

    Requires: Potential for improved fuel economy can be estimated for any vehicle based on engine power and drag forces

    Requires: Bilgewater must either be retained on board and disposed of on shore, or must meet discharge requirements as specified in the Vessel General Permit (VGP)

    Applies to: Any business that generates wastewater from water-based parts cleaning operations
    Requires: Permit required for wastewater discharge to environment or to municipal sewage system

    Applies to: Any facility carrying out processes that involve cleaning with petroleum-based (non-water-based) solvents, including degreasers and solvent-based parts washers. The regulations also cover the use and disposal of solvent wetted rags to manually wipe soils from the metal surfaces (hand wiping).
    Requires: Hazardous waste regulations may apply to storage and disposal; some facilities may need air emissions permits.

  • Diesel Fuel Requirements (Marine)
    Applies to: All vessels registered in any of over 150 countries (including the U.S.) that are signatories to the MARPOL agreement.
    Requires: Sulfur content of fuel must be below a specified maximum. Special rules apply when operating in designated geographical areas.

    Applies to: Any vessel 79 feet in length or greater, except for military and recreational vessels
    Requires: Regulations require that vessels minimize graywater discharges to water, particularly near shore, and that discharges do not contain excessive levels of oils, phosphates, or other materials that can damage coastal ecosystems.

    Requires: Discharge must meet standards limiting bacterial level and solids content; discharge of sewage is prohibited entirely in some sensitive locations.
