Dumpsters
Applies to: Any facility that stores waste in dumpsters for removal
Requires: Facilities should verify that hazardous or otherwise regulated wastes are handled separately from general trash

    Applies to: Any facility with floor drains
    Requires: Facilities must obtain either a permit for direct discharge to the environment or a permit for discharge to a sewage treatment system

  • Hazardous Waste
    Applies to: Anyone who generates more than 100 kilograms per month of hazardous waste, or more than 1 kilogram per month of certain acutely hazardous wastes. (These limits may be lower in some states.)
    Requires: Registration with EPA as a hazardous waste generator; compliance with rules for storage and disposal of wastes; for large quantities, reporting of quantities generated to EPA every two years

    Requires: Inspectors from various federal, state, regional and local agencies have the legal authority to enter a facility or private property to conduct an inspection to determine compliance with environmental laws, rules, and regulations

    Requires: Use and disposal of pesticides is regulated by federal and state law

  • Placarding
    Applies to:

    Any person who offers for transport or transports any materials that are regulated as "hazardous materials," including hazardous waste

    Requires:

    A diamond-shaped sign must be affixed to any motor vehicle that carries hazardous materials. The sign provides information about the type of hazard through special color, symbols, and indicator numbers, as specified in the regulations.

    Applies to: Any facility that owns and/or operates electrical equipment containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in concentrations above a specified limit
    Requires: Equipment still in service must be inspected quarterly for leaks; out of service equipment cannot be sold, and cannot be stored for more than 30 days, but must be disposed of according to EPA regulations

    Applies to:

    The basic federal law regulating solid and hazardous waste disposal

    Requires:

    Facilities must determine whether their waste is classified as "hazardous" according to federal and state regulations, and if so must handle and dispose of it accordingly

    Applies to: Any facility with aboveground oil storage capacity greater than 1,320 U.S. gallons, or completely buried oil storage capacity greater than 42,000 gallons. Oils covered under the rule include diesel fuel, gasoline, lubricating oils, water soluble machining oils, oil-filled electrical equipment, etc.
    Requires: Facilities are required to develop and implement a spill control plan

    Applies to: Any person, company or organization responsible for a release or spill
    Requires: Any person or organization responsible for a release or spill is required to notify the federal National Response Center when the amount reaches a federally determined limit

    Applies to: Anyone who disposes of several common waste products, including batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment, and fluorescent light bulbs
    Requires:
